Most people are familiar with the benefits of an air conditioner. But, we often note, however, that many people are unsure if you should maintain an air conditioner and exactly how to do it. In this blog, we answer all your pressing questions about air conditioning maintenance.

Why does an air conditioner need maintenance?

To enjoy the benefits of your air conditioner as long and as optimally as possible, it's smart to check it regularly. We list below a few reasons what benefits air conditioning maintenance can provide.

A/C maintenance why

1. Preventing diseases

The humidity in your home plays a big role in preventing disease. When there is a problem with your air conditioner, it will affect the humidity in your space. In turn, less optimal humidity will have a negative effect on your immunity, making you and your family much more susceptible to disease. Also, through the filters present, a well-maintained air conditioner ensures that pollutants are not blown through the room.

An air conditioning maintenance is even more useful for people who suffer from allergies. Here, the filter of the air conditioner is very important. Dust can remain in this filter. This creates the chance that the air conditioner will spread this in your home, causing you to suffer from your allergies faster.

2. A more pleasant air

When dusts do not accumulate in your air conditioner, not only do you avoid disease, but the quality of indoor air will be maintained. You also limit the circulation of less fresh odors in your rooms. Through an air conditioning maintenance, your air conditioner will continue to filter your air, keeping the ventilation and humidity optimal. This way, you continue to enjoy healthy and clean indoor air.

3. Reduce costs

An air conditioning maintenance will also ensure a longer life, because you will notice a problem quickly. Thus, the air conditioner is less likely to break down and you avoid high repair costs or the cost of a new air conditioning system. Finally, you also save money on your energy bill. This is because a well-maintained air conditioner will function better and therefore cool and heat more efficiently. Thus, your air conditioner will consume less and thus also cost less.

When should you service your air conditioner?

When and how often you should have your air conditioner checked depends on the type of air conditioner. For split air conditioners, it is recommended that you perform (or have performed) air conditioning maintenance at least once a year. Monoblock air conditioners, on the other hand, for example the Innova monoblock, are actually maintenance-free. That is, an annual intervention is not necessary, and you can easily maintain your air conditioner yourself. More on that in the section "air conditioning maintenance: do it yourself or have it done".

Still experiencing problems or don't know when a maintenance is still needed? Below we give you some tips on when it is time for an air conditioning maintenance.

A/C maintenance when

1. The air conditioner makes a lot of noise

When your air conditioning starts making more noise or gets louder, there is a good chance something is wrong and air conditioning maintenance is needed. Noise pollution from an air conditioner can occur in several ways. When you hear the following noises, it's best to check them out:

  • Rattling noise. If your air conditioner is making a rattling noise, something has most likely gone wrong with the fan causing it to block.
  • Scratching noise. An air conditioner can also begin to make a scratching noise after a while. This often indicates a worn ball bearing.
  • Bubbling noise. Finally, a bubbling sound can also occur with an air conditioner. When you hear this, there is a good chance there is a leak in it.

2. Reduced performance

Your air conditioner may suddenly be cooling or heating your space remarkably less quickly or efficiently. If your air conditioner is significantly less efficient, this also indicates a problem within the unit.

3. A higher energy bill

As mentioned earlier, a well-maintained air conditioner works more efficiently. If there are problems with your air conditioner or wear and tear is present, the air conditioner will not perform as well. As a result, it will consume more, and of course you will see that on your energy bill.

Air conditioning maintenance: do it yourself or have it done?

Now is it better to have air conditioning maintenance done by an expert, or can you do it yourself? It depends on the type of air conditioner and what problems you are experiencing. We explain.

What can you do yourself?

Maintaining a monoblock air conditioner is quite easy. For example, you only need to remove the grille at the top of the indoor unit and clean it with a clean cloth, if necessary. Under the grille is a kind of mesh that acts as a filter. You need to vacuum this, and after this the maintenance is done. This is because the other parts are in a closed unit. Maintaining a split air conditioner, on the other hand, involves a bit more. We recommend leaving this to a certified air conditioning specialist.

What do experts do during an air conditioning maintenance?

Experts who service split air conditioners then get to work on some more technical issues. We list some examples for you:

  • First, the expert checks the ventilation, compressor and filter. These are replaced, if necessary, with a new part.
  • The filter and both the indoor unit and the outdoor unit, are cleaned. This way, you don't have to worry about bacteria and mold and your air conditioner continues to blow clean and healthy air.
  • The expert checks the air conditioner for coolant leaks.
  • If there is no leakage, the coolant is refilled or replaced, depending on the condition of the remaining coolant.

Do you notice that your own maintenance of your monoblock air conditioner is inadequate, or do you recognize any of the above indications? Even then, it is more interesting to take an experienced air conditioning technician under your wing.
