Many people know the benefits of an air conditioner, but we often find that there is a lot of confusion about its maintenance. Should you actually maintain an air conditioner, and if so, how exactly do you do it? In this blog, we answer all your questions about air conditioning maintenance.
Why is air conditioning maintenance necessary?
To enjoy the benefits of your air conditioning for as long and as optimally as possible, it's smart to check it regularly. We recommend getting your air conditioning serviced at least 1-2x a year. Below we list some of the key benefits of air conditioning maintenance for you.

1. Preventing diseases
The humidity in your home plays a crucial role in preventing health problems. A malfunctioning air conditioner can disturb the humidity in your home, which has a negative effect on your resistance. This makes you and your family more susceptible to disease. In addition, thanks to the filters present, a well-maintained air conditioner prevents pollutants such as dust and pollen from spreading through the room.
For people with allergies, regular air conditioning maintenance is especially important. Air conditioner filters can trap dust and allergens. Without maintenance, this can accumulate and eventually enter your home, worsening allergy symptoms. Therefore, a clean filter is essential for a healthy living environment.
2. Healthier air
By regularly servicing your air conditioner, you will prevent bacteria and mold from settling in it. Not only will it make you less sick, but the indoor air quality can be maintained. You will also limit the circulation of less fresh odors in your rooms. With air conditioning maintenance, your air conditioner will continue to filter your air, keeping ventilation and humidity optimal. This way, you continue to enjoy healthy and clean indoor air.
3. Lower costs
An air conditioner that works well has a positive impact on your energy bill. This is because they consume much less. A properly maintained air conditioner functions more efficiently, both in cooling and heating, resulting in lower energy consumption and thus lower costs.
4. Your air conditioner will last longer
Regular A/C maintenance extends the life of your system. Problems are spotted more quickly, so you avoid breakdowns and avoid high repair costs or the purchase of a new system.
When should you service your air conditioner?
How often and when you should have your air conditioner checked depends on the type of air conditioner. For split air conditioners, it is recommended to have (or have had) a maintenance check at least once a year. Monoblock air conditioners, such as the Innova monoblock, on the other hand, are virtually maintenance-free. This means that an annual inspection is not necessary and you can easily do the maintenance yourself. You can read more about this in the section "Air conditioning maintenance: do it yourself or have it done".
Are you still having problems with your air conditioner or in doubt when maintenance is needed? Here are some helpful tips for recognizing when it's time for maintenance.
1. Your air conditioner makes a lot of noise
When your air conditioning starts making more noise or gets louder, there is a good chance something is wrong and air conditioning maintenance is needed. Noise pollution from an air conditioner can occur in several ways. When you hear the following noises, it's best to check them out:
- Rattling sound. If your A/C is making a rattling noise, most likely something has gone wrong with the fan causing it to block.
- Scratching sound. An air conditioner can also begin to make a scratching noise after a while. This often indicates a worn ball bearing.
- Bubbling sound. Finally, a bubbling sound can also occur with an air conditioner. When you hear it, there is a good chance there is a leak in it.

3. You have a higher energy bill
As mentioned earlier, a well-maintained air conditioner operates significantly more efficiently. When problems occur, such as wear and tear or breakdowns, it directly affects the performance of the unit. A less well-functioning air conditioner has to work harder to achieve the same results, leading to increased energy consumption. This increased consumption translates directly to higher energy bills.

2. It takes longer to cool/heat a room
If you notice that your air conditioner is suddenly cooling or heating much less efficiently, or it is taking longer than usual, it could be a sign that something is not right. This can mean that the unit has to work harder to achieve the same results, which not only leads to higher energy consumption, but can also shorten the life of the air conditioner.
Reduced performance can have several causes, such as clogged filters, lack of refrigerant or wear and tear on internal parts. Therefore, it is important to take quick action and have your air conditioner checked and serviced.

Air conditioning maintenance: do it yourself or have it done?
Now is it better to have air conditioning maintenance done by an expert, or can you do it yourself? It depends on the type of air conditioner and what problems you are experiencing. We explain.
What can you do yourself?
The maintenance of a monoblock air conditioner is simple. You only need to remove the grille at the top of the indoor unit and clean it with a cloth. Under the grille is a filter that you can vacuum. After that, the maintenance is already done.
With a split airco maintenance is a bit more complex. Therefore, we recommend leaving this to a licensed air conditioning specialist.
What do experts do during an air conditioning maintenance?
Experts who service split air conditioners then get to work on some more technical issues. We list a few examples for you:
- First, the expert checks the ventilation, compressor and filter. These are replaced, if necessary, with a new part.
- The filter, as well as both the indoor and outdoor units, are cleaned. This ensures that you don't have to worry about bacteria and mold, and that your air conditioner continues to circulate clean and healthy air.
- The expert checks the air conditioner for coolant leaks.
- If there is no leakage, the coolant is refilled or replaced, depending on the condition of the remaining coolant.
Do you notice that your own maintenance of your monoblock air conditioner is inadequate, or do you recognize any of the above indications? Even then, it is more interesting to take an experienced air conditioning technician under your wing.
Frequently Asked Questions
We recommend servicing your air conditioner at least 1-2x a year. How often and when also depends on which type of air conditioner. For a split air conditioner, it is recommended to perform maintenance at least once a year. Monoblock air conditioners usually require less maintenance and you can easily do this maintenance yourself.
An air conditioning maintenance can certainly be beneficial and helps keep your air conditioner running as efficiently as possible. By having your air conditioner serviced regularly, you not only prevent health problems and lower costs, but your air conditioner also lasts longer.
The best time to have your air conditioner serviced (or service it yourself) is during the in-between seasons. Spring and fall are perfect for this. Temperatures are still mild then so the air conditioning doesn't have to work as much as summer or winter.
